Bali’s New Special Economic Zone: A New Era for Wellness & Investment

May 27, 2026

Bali is entering an exciting new chapter with the launch of the Sanur Health & Wellness Special Economic Zone (SEZ). This will be Indonesia’s first economic zone fully focused on healthcare, wellness, and medical tourism.

The project was officially announced by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo through Government Regulation No. 41 of 2022, signed on November 1, 2022. The regulation officially established Sanur as a Special Economic Zone focused on health and tourism.

The SEZ became legally active immediately after the regulation was issued, while the full development and operational rollout has been taking place in phases between 2022 and 2025. In June 2025, current President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated the Sanur SEZ together with the new Bali International Hospital.

Located along the beachfront in Sanur, the project combines international-standard healthcare facilities, luxury hospitality, wellness centers, and commercial spaces in one integrated development. At the center of the SEZ is the newly opened Bali International Hospital, developed in collaboration with international medical partners.

The Indonesian government hopes this development will position Bali as one of Southeast Asia’s leading medical tourism destinations, while also attracting billions in foreign investment and creating thousands of jobs.

For Bali, this marks an important shift. The island has traditionally relied heavily on tourism, but the new SEZ supports a more diversified economy focused on wellness, long-stay visitors, and higher-quality tourism.

The impact on Bali’s real estate market is already becoming visible, especially in Sanur. Demand is expected to grow for luxury residences, serviced apartments, wellness-focused developments, and long-term rental properties for medical professionals, international visitors, and retirees.

Many investors now see Sanur as one of Bali’s most promising long-term growth areas thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, beachfront lifestyle, improving infrastructure, and increasing international appeal.

The Sanur SEZ is more than just a development project, it reflects Bali’s evolution into a destination not only for holidays, but also for health, wellness, international living, and sustainable investment opportunities.

And what is the first next step in 2026?

The first major next steps for the Sanur Special Economic Zone in 2026 are focused on expanding Bali’s international healthcare ecosystem even further.

One of the biggest developments is the opening and expansion of specialized medical facilities around the Bali International Hospital. In early 2026, construction officially started on the new JEC Bali @ Sanur Eye Hospital, which is expected to become a major regional center for advanced eye care and medical tourism.

Another important step is the launch of The Solitaire, a luxury aesthetic and plastic surgery clinic in the SEZ, developed with international medical partners, including specialists from South Korea. The clinic is expected to begin operations during 2026 and will focus on cosmetic surgery, anti-aging treatments, and regenerative medicine.

The government is also accelerating the broader development of both the Sanur SEZ and the nearby Kura Kura Bali SEZ, with plans to attract more international investors, improve infrastructure, and strengthen Bali’s position as a premium wellness and medical tourism destination.

For real estate and investment, 2026 is expected to be the year where the first visible impact becomes clearer:

  • More international healthcare operators entering Bali
  • Growth in long-stay accommodation demand
  • New wellness and retirement concepts
  • Increased investor attention toward Sanur

Many analysts now see 2026 as the beginning of Bali’s transition from a tourism-only destination into a broader international lifestyle, healthcare, and investment hub.
